課程概述

Course description
Students who take this course already have basic knowledge and skills in conducting social science research. This course is designed to advance students’ ability to critically appraise social science research. Critical appraisal refers to “the process of analyzing a study in a rigorous and methodical way (Cavaleri et al., 2018).” Specific attention will be on applying guidelines to critically appraise qualitative research, quantitative research, and mixed methods research. Students will also get access to web resources related to academic English.

Students will be able
1. To understand the importance of critically appraise social science research in informing evidence-based practice and policy
2. To acquire essential skills to critically appraise social science research
3. To gain knowledge of guides and tools for critical appraisal of social science research
4. To apply guidelines to appraise selected peer-reviewed studies
5. To access to web resources related to academic English
6. To reflect on how the course impacts on students' knowledge and appreciation of methods of social science research and academic English 
課程要求
Course requirements
1. Punctuality, attendance, and active participation are expected. Students are required to read the assigned readings. Students (a). raise at least 2 questions for discussion, and (b). compare (similarity) and contrast (difference) the information provided in the appraising articles with your previous understandings.
2. Research dialogue: Present a research interest of you and use visual maps as Figure 6.1 Example of Brainstorming Considerations (Wheeldon & Åhlberg, 2012a) to illustrate different components and their relationships. The two dialogues are scheduled on 10/18 and 11/22.
3. Appraisal reports: Write reports to include (a). applying guidelines to appraise 5 studies (Adorno et al., 2015; Asakura et al., 2021; Faye et al., 2021; Guerrero et al., 2017; Ravalier et al., 2020) and (b). your comments and reflection re: the study. The reports are due on 9/25, 10/9, 10/30, 11/20, 11/27.

iv、 Researching Competencies of Clinical Social Work Practice (Asakura et al., 2021)
v、 A Scientific Framework for Social Work Doctoral Education in the 21st Century (Guerrero et al., 2017)
4. Course evaluation paper: Write a 1-3 page paper to describe your likes, dislikes, gains, and suggestions to this course content and design. The due date of the evaluation is on 12/6/2022.
5. Reflection paper: Write a 3-5 page paper to identify how the course impacts on your knowledge and appreciation of methods of social science research and academic English. The due date of the reflection is on 12/20/2022.
